Good news, everyone! We have an epic night planned for you down in Fisherman's Wharf at The Parlor! Free drinks, great music, and a chance to win some awesome prizes, all thanks to Mashable, TechKaraoke SF, and our gracious host, Yahoo!

Yes, there will be a karaoke contest tonight, with slots for Best Solo Performance, Best Duet Performance, and Best Group! There are three slots for each, with contestants picked from a random drawing that will be held right before the contest. All which will start at 11:00. BUT in the meantime, karaoke will be available to all until the bar kicks us out at closing time!

A quick note. We have an expected turnout of 100-200 people, all of whom might want to sing. Since there are only so many songs I can fit into the evening, be prepared for only one song per person, with a first come first serve list. I will run my regular rotation as normal, but will be making room for any and all new singers. I want EVERYONE to have at least a chance of one song, so make it COUNT!

Come early to have a better chance of belting a few tunes before the crowd comes in for the contest! We start, as usual, at 9:30

It's funny that when I started my karaoke song buying binge a couple of years ago, that there were so many songs that I didn't realize I don't have, so it's always fun going around filling in those holes. For instance, I had a severe Paula Abdul deficit. Yeah, I know, most of you think that that wasn't a bad thing, but c'mon! "Cold Hearted Snake"? Pure 80's cheese classic! Sing What You Hate Week

So this week I'm trying an experiment. I want everyone coming to my shows to sing one song that they absolutely despise. The song that comes on and makes you seize up in a violent panic attack, before you start throwing hot coffee on the offending radio/ipod/car stereo/person emitting the musical travesty. But here is the catch. Try and sing it without any menace, any hint of disgust. This is not an attempt to make you love the song by any means, rather think of it as a way to confront a knee jerk revulsion, in order to help restore balance in yourself. Of course, songs in the dreaded "Black List" (you know the ones) are available, but try and avoid them. Challenge yourself to think of the one song you just cannot stand.

EXAMPLE: I am not a fan of the Counting Crows. No offense to those who are. Something about Adam Duritz' voice just sends me through through the roof. So I plan on learning "Round Here" and singing it.

And be forewarned. Someone may choose a song or an artists that you love. Do not be offended, rather applaud this person's willingness to face what they loathe, to come out of a silly little cathartic experience feeling cleansed. Yes, it's a little masochistic, but I'm laughing about this already!

I have been following a certain karaoke forum for a few months now. One of the threads was posted by a gentleman who was very VERY excited about songs from Grease 2 being released for karaoke. He was then thoroughly mocked. Seems that many people on this forum thought songs from Grease 2 would never requested or sung, who the hey even knows any of these songs? I was excited for his enthusiasm, but I agreed with the majority, why Grease 2 and not a gagillion other songs the manufacturers could have made?

Flash forward a few weeks, while discussing this poor misguided man's request amongst friends, when at the mere mention of Grease 2, they broke out into songs from that film. Someone even had the soundtrack on his iPhone and started playing them right then and there. I was flabbergasted. It was decided then. You know me. Give the people what they want! (unless it's "Don't Stop Believing", then you try to talk them out of it.)

I want to take this opportunity to thank every single one of you who come out and support my karaoke nights. You are obviously the reason why I have this weird and wonderful little job, and I appreciate it immensely. Which is why I regret to inform you that I am no longer hosting Temple Bar karaoke. There will still be karaoke, with KJ Kendo at the reigns, so you have a place to go for your Thursday night fix. I am going to be moving my show to Thursday nights at The Swinging Door in San Mateo, my regular Friday night place. I will still be hosting karaoke in the San Francisco, every Sunday night at Butter, so all you city folk can come out and see me.

I work very hard so that you all can come out on a regular basis and have a fun karaoke night, so any decision I make to leave a bar is not an entirely personal one. It's because of you that I can do this, so I am dedicated to securing gigs that satisfy both your needs and mine. So thanks for coming out to the shows, thanks for all the songs and thank you for allowing me to work karaoke magic night after night, week after week.

Thursday night karaoke at the Swinging Door starts on October 29th.

I get it. I get it. "Don't Stop Believing" is the ULTIMATE karaoke anthem. It talks about you, the karaoke-r, right there in the lyrics. You are the street light people, you are the lonely world livers. You have dreams and aspirations, and you will never stop believing in them, never stop believing in going to strange bars with strange people and forming an instant and unbreakable camaraderie with them by singing this song. You want free drinks all night? Sing it. You want the attention of that smoking little number in the corner? Sing it. You want God himself to lean down from his heavenly dais just to give you the Devil horns and a hi five? Sing it! You want the KJ to sit in his/her little corner, cursing the very day(s) he/she ever heard this blasted song belted out over 100,000 times, like some frightening VH1 "I Love The 80's" remake of "Groundhog's Day"? Sing it.

I have been a KJ for a while now, and I can tell you that, yes, this is the most popular karaoke song. Requests for "Don't Stop Believing" far surpass "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Summer Nights", "I will Survive" and "Baby Got Back".

Which is why I banned it for a year.

I am everyone's cheerleader. It says so right here. I want you to sing your heart out, I want you to bring the house down, set the roof on fire, turn this mother out, take it to the bridge, don't stop 'till you get enough, bring it on home, turn it up AND get on the good foot. Here is my reason folks. I have thousands of songs for you to sing. THOUSANDS. Why must you always go straight to Journey? Hypothetical question, of course. But here at Roger Niner karaoke central, I am starting a new feature to suggest some NEW songs that will vault you to Perry like status in the eyes of the bar, and maybe a hug or two from the KJ, if you are okay with your KJ hugging you, which is cool with me if you're cool with it, nothing weird there right? Just two people hugging, nothing wrong with it, yeah? Our first song is...

Fat Bottomed Girls by Queen - A rock song to top all rock songs. The lyrics may be skewed towards the male point of view, and could be seen as somewhat sexist, but Freddie Mercury sang it, so it evens out. Plus super bonus plus irony points to girls who sing a song about sexually attractive voluptuous women as sung by the gayest man ever. Easy to sing, and sweetly short. It has a super awesome guitar intro that announces that we about to get freaky up in here, then comes down like Thor's hammer on your mind! See, Fat Bottomed Girls are just like the street light people in Journeys anthem. But we aren't asking them to not stop believing, as if the street light people are already defeated and deflated. Whiners. No we are telling these lovely ladies that something they already know, that they make the rocking world go 'round. They are literally causing the earth to spin on a rock related axis! It is a song that defies issues of body image and self esteem, and just says "You go with your bad selves". And any song that ends with the line "Get On Your Bikes and Ride" is even more awesome for being so eco-friendly. Go green with Queen.
